Snake River trustees table 2024–25 financial audit as state requires more detailed reporting

Chairman Lon Harrington and the Snake River School Board met Oct. 15 in Rockford and voted 4–0 to table the district's 2024–25 financial audit until the November meeting after Superintendent Mark Kress said the state is demanding more detailed reporting that has delayed reconciliations and monthly statements.
Kress told trustees the delay affects many districts and staff prioritized year-end budget work; he said the district remains "in the black" and expects final numbers next month. He added that the state legislature has increased scrutiny of school budgets amid a broader state funding shortfall and that districts with strong fund balances may see reduced state aid because the state views them as able to self-fund.
Board member Josh Sorensen moved to table the audit and Carol Hepworth seconded; all trustees present voted aye. Kress said staff will complete the outstanding July–September monthly reports and year-end reconciliation before the next meeting and plans to bring a proposed strategy for spending down a portion of the general fund to the November meeting if trustees choose to do so.
The board took no formal action on spending at the Oct. 15 meeting; the audit remains tabled pending the additional state-required reporting.
