The Common Council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the installation of equipment and operation of a wireless 9‑1‑1 public safety answering point (PSAP) at the Waukesha dispatch center.
City Attorney Brian framed the resolution as authorization for a limited purpose: allowing contractors to install the necessary equipment and for the city to operate the PSAP. Captain Becker said the upgrade was included in the 2023 budget for 2024. "It was all, it was like $45,000 for a ESInet upgrade," Captain Becker said, adding that there is no additional financial impact this year because it was already budgeted in the CIP. He also noted that contractors and carriers cannot begin work until the council signs the resolution and it is countersigned by the Waukesha County Communications Center.
Council members asked whether increased wireless call volume would require more staff in future; Captain Becker confirmed existing approved dispatcher supervisor positions and ongoing hiring efforts. Alderman Narricane moved approval and the council voted unanimously.
The resolution is procedural authorization for staff to proceed with equipment installation and to begin coordination with the county communications center and vendors.
