Paul Watkins, legal counsel, told the board the process for annexation includes adopting an ordinance, filing a petition in chancery court, allowing objectors to appear and offering city witnesses and likely an outside planner to support the petition. He said the property owner had provided the legal description and indicated willingness to pay the associated costs. “If y’all give us the thumbs up, we’ll go ahead and get the ordinance drafted, bring it to y’all at your next meeting for a 1st reading and start moving forward with the process,” Paul said.
Why it matters: annexation would bring the owner’s land inside Oxford City limits, subjecting it to city zoning and services; staff told the board that utilities appear available in the area and that the annexation would follow the usual three‑reading process with a chancery‑court petition.
The board moved to authorize staff to prepare the ordinance and directed legal staff to return with a first reading at a future meeting.
