The Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees unanimously approved a one-year extension of President Aysegul Timur’s employment agreement on April 14, extending her contract through June 30, 2027, increasing her base salary from $540,000 to $750,000 and raising the potential annual incentive from 20 percent to 40 percent of base salary (approximately $240,000), contingent on available funds.
Trustee Joseph Fogg moved to approve the extension and Trustee Henry Saad seconded; Chair Larry Antonucci called for a voice vote and the motion passed with unanimous support. The Board’s action follows a consultant compensation assessment and a negotiation process authorized by the Board in February.
Board discussion before the vote focused on benchmarking and precedent. Trustee Richard Eide asked whether alternatives had been considered between a higher base salary and a larger incentive. Chair Antonucci said the president elected a lower base and higher at-risk incentive. Trustee Derek Lura flagged a wider trend shown in the consultant’s report that presidential pay in the State University System (SUS) is diverging from national peer institutions and said the pattern posed long-term budgetary questions for the system.
Lura noted the consultant’s charts showed limited overlap between SUS presidential pay percentiles and national peer percentiles, prompting questions about how Florida institutions’ compensation norms might affect future hiring costs. The Board discussed those benchmarking observations but proceeded with the single-year extension, which must be confirmed by the Board of Governors at its June meeting.
Several members of the public registered comments before the vote; the transcript lists speakers but does not record their full remarks. After the vote, President Timur thanked trustees and said she looked forward to continuing her work, adding, "There was important work ahead and I encourage continued momentum." The extension will be forwarded to the Board of Governors for final confirmation in June, per system rules that govern presidential contracts.
