Board declines to change chicken coop size limit after resident’s permit denied

After a resident built a chicken coop that exceeded the 15-square-foot limit in Village Ordinance 21.12 and had a permit denied, the Board took no action and left the 15 sq. ft. limit in place.
Administrator Nick Leonard told the Board that resident Lane Baze had built a chicken coop at 536 Maine Ave that exceeded the 15-square-foot limit set by Village Ordinance 21.12 and that Baze’s permit application had been denied.
Leonard recounted the long process the village followed in 2021 to allow chickens, which included resident input and Plan Commission review, and recommended the Board take no action to change the size limit. Baze said he built the coop and received a notice from the Village that a permit was required; he learned during that process his coop exceeded the ordinance and the permit was denied.
The Board declined to modify Ordinance 21.12 and no motion to change the ordinance was approved during the meeting.
