The Audit and Compliance Committee of the Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees approved a revised Employee Code of Ethical Conduct on April 7, 2026 after a presentation by Precious Gunter, the university’s Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer and Title IX Coordinator. The updated Code removes legacy language, adds the University’s Statement of Free Expression, and aligns the document with diversity, equity and inclusion requirements; it applies only to FGCU employees while trustees and students follow separate codes.
Gunter told trustees the Code is a compilation of existing University policies and regulations and that all employees must complete annual compliance and ethics training and acknowledge the Code through the university’s Workday system. "The Code was presented as an information item at the last ACC meeting for trustees to provide feedback on the proposed revisions," Gunter said, adding that a cross‑campus committee participated in drafting the final version.
Chair Joseph Fogg III said the substance of the Code is straightforward but the document has grown long over time and recommended the full text be retained while adding a concise three‑ to four‑page summary highlighting critical employee responsibilities. "Documents such as the Code often become lengthier over time as revisions are made," Fogg said, and he asked staff to produce a short, accessible overview for employees.
Trustee Derek Lura urged clearer, less legalistic language and discussed options for where a brief summary could appear (within the Code or as part of employee training). Vice President and General Counsel Kristi Carman confirmed that General Counsel had reviewed the draft. Gunter said the Office of Institutional Ethics and Compliance and campus units provide ongoing training and that managers receive system alerts in Workday when employees do not complete required acknowledgements.
Trustee Doug VanOort moved to approve the Employee Code of Ethical Conduct; Trustee Henry Saad seconded the motion. The Committee voted unanimously in favor. The Committee will recommend the Code to the full Board for final approval at the Board meeting on April 14, 2026.
