Aldermen meeting canceled after lack of quorum

A scheduled aldermen meeting was canceled Thursday at 4:30 p.m. after only two aldermen were present, the speaker said. "Due to lack of a quorum, this meeting will not be taking place," the speaker stated.

The announcement came as the roll call and brief opening remarks finished. The speaker, who identified herself during roll call as Karen Stennis, said there would be no action taken and the meeting could be dismissed. "There is only 2 alderman present," she said, adding that, at that time, the meeting could not be called to order.

Participants discussed whether the meeting still needed to be formally called and adjourned. One speaker noted, "It can't be called without a quorum," while another said, "I believe it needs to be called, announced, and then adjourned." The exchange left the procedural conclusion that no formal actions would occur at this session.

The speaker thanked members of the media and constituents for attending and said attendees "We'll be making comment outside," indicating informal conversation or comment among those present after the cancellation. No votes were held and no motions were made.
