Commission advances cemetery mapping, surveying and records work; orders flags and considers online mapping

Commissioners prioritized several operational projects to improve cemetery records and site upkeep.

The commission discussed updating the North maps to add names and verify who is buried in each plot and agreed to set dates for on-site mapping and placement of corner markers. Members noted a new section of the cemetery lacks an official survey; Wayne Hall has spoken to Tim Short Surveying, and Sue James asked whether a local forestry class might assist with layout work. The commission discussed arranging mapping nights to complete team-based verification.

Inventory and care items were also discussed. A hack fence repair was reported complete on March 17, 2026. The commission has 144 flags sized 12"x18" on hand but needs 174; members agreed to order flags by the gross and to purchase one 6"x10" green flag for a specific plot. The Historical Society (Martha Hill) is researching an "Established" date for a sign; once design is finalized the sign can be produced in about three weeks.

Members noted that Evergreen Cemetery in Rutland is exploring a 'Tafo File' style digital mapping to make cemetery records available online, and the commission discussed the potential to pursue similar digital mapping for Mountain View. Commissioners also noted a plot ownership matter: the late Rustin Swensen owns a plot in Mountain View and Scott Lilly (VA) owns lots 37 and 38 (purchased in 1966 for $20 each) that may be available for sale.

Wayne Hall reported he purchased a 100-foot measuring tape for commission use and will seek reimbursement. The commission identified next steps: schedule mapping/site-marking dates, obtain a survey for the new section, and order required flags.
