Council highlights stormwater study, stream gauges and school recognitions in routine business

During routine business on March 3 the Jenkins City Council discussed ongoing storm and flood impacts, approved a roadblock request for a school senior trip and adopted a resolution honoring Jenkins High School’s boys basketball team.

Council and staff described recent flooding that washed sediment and rocks onto roads, causing shoulder failures and other damage. Officials said four stream gauges have been installed (Barnhill dam and other locations) in partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey and local organizations. Council members said the gauges and supporting data will help the city document rainfall-to-stream impacts and improve future mitigation planning.

Staff also described a stormwater engineering program under consideration, with an estimated study/implementation envelope of about $5,200,000 to analyze mountain runoff and potential mitigations such as constructed channels, weirs and green-infrastructure measures. Council members said the funding and work would help reduce the impact of smaller storms though they did not expect to eliminate all flood risk.

On other business the council approved a senior trip roadblock request for March 5 after school scheduling was adjusted, and adopted a ceremonial resolution recognizing the Jenkins High School boys basketball team for winning the district championship and a successful 2024–25 season. Council encouraged the community to attend upcoming games.

A resident also raised a neighborhood concern about multiple uncontained dogs and puppies; council agreed to contact the dog warden and pound to explore enforcement and assistance options.
