Several residents used the public-comment period to press the commission on long-running local issues, asking for accountability and follow-up.
Sean Davis, who lives next door to AJ's Bar and Grill, said the business expanded parking within 25 feet of his bedroom wall, alleged decades of sewage and ground contamination, and said TDEC has no record of a septic system plan at the site. He asked the commission to apply zoning law and ensure oversight rather than leaving neighbors to bear risks.
Ken Young urged swift accountability at the local water authority, accusing the authority's leadership of long-term supervisory failures and asking commissioners to consider appointee recommendations carefully when the mayor makes the next appointment. Derek Dodson warned that the Cumberland Oaks project could bring hundreds of homes to rural acreage, increase school staffing needs and require large sewage treatment areas; he urged the commission to scrutinize density increases and planning changes.
Mayor Hutto said staff and relevant departments have been working with residents on these concerns and confirmed the county will meet Thursday with staff (including TDEC liaison work) to investigate the AJ's Bar contamination question. Commissioners agreed residents' allegations warranted committee or planning follow-up and noted that planning commission actions (including a recent deferral of the Cumberland Oaks item) will continue through the normal committee channels.
What's next: The county will convene staff follow-ups with relevant departments, steering/committee review for planning issues, and potential appeals or BZA filings for nonconforming-use allegations; residents were advised to pursue Board of Zoning Appeals (BOZA) remedies for specific nonconforming-use claims.
