The City of Bedford Board of Works and Safety on July 21 approved multiple personnel actions involving the Bedford Police Department, including hiring a new officer, authorizing a reimbursement/bonus agreement, approving a retention incentive, and accepting a temporary disability for a senior officer.
Chief Moore presented the personnel items. He asked the board to approve the hire of Dominique Atkinson, saying Atkinson "has completed all the requirements set by our department," including medical and psychological evaluations, approval by the local pension board and State PERF. The board voted to approve the hire; the Chair and committee members seconded and approved by voice vote.
Chief Moore also asked the board to approve a law enforcement bonus and reimbursement agreement for Atkinson and requested the board sign that agreement so he could finalize it with the new officer. The board approved the bonus/reimbursement agreement.
On officer disability, Chief Moore told the board that Major Blake Wade was placed on light duty June 8 and received a temporary disability benefit July 9. "That disability is subject to review in six months by the INPRS board," Chief Moore said, and the board voted to accept the temporary disability. Chief Moore explained the department will review whether a job is available to offer Major Wade if circumstances change.
Finally, the board approved a retention and recognition bonus proposal for sworn officers, which Chief Moore said includes a provision requiring repayment of the bonus if an officer leaves or is terminated for cause; the approval was contingent on later common council approval for funding.
Next steps: the city will process onboarding for Dominique Atkinson, execute the approved bonus agreement, and monitor Major Wade's status pending INPRS review.
