Street superintendent reports storm cleanup nearing completion; FEMA set to inspect

Street Superintendent Bob Simpson told the commission that crews had completed the bulk of the storm cleanup and that the operation would continue with targeted sweeps of alleys and the fairgrounds.
“As of 04:30 today, we had finished the bulk of the town,” Simpson said, reporting that crews had hauled roughly 641 semi loads of debris and estimating total piles could exceed 2,000,000 cubic feet of tree material. Simpson said FEMA is scheduled to be on site Wednesday at 9 a.m. to inspect large debris piles and solid-waste facilities.
Commissioners discussed whether to keep a temporary drop-off site open longer to allow residents and paid contractors to use the facility. Simpson said staff would coordinate timelines for closing the 3rd Street drop-off and perform a second sweep once the immediate cleanup is done. He also said the city would borrow a semi from the county to speed removal and that building and landfill logistics were being coordinated.
Simpson asked commissioners to continue directing residents to report specific alleys or problem areas to city hall so crews can focus targeted pickups rather than removing material that has been in alleys for decades.
FEMA’s upcoming visit will focus on large debris piles, the landfill and city facilities, Simpson said; staff will notify commissioners when the agency sets its final inspection plan.
