The Amityville Planning Board voted 5-0 on April 2 to recommend that the Board of Trustees review an application to designate the John H. Langlois house at 38 Barberry Court as a local historic landmark.
The nomination was presented by Sabrina Lin, co-owner of the property, and Joseph Guidice, who said he was speaking with the owners’ permission. They told the board that the house, built in the 1940s, shows early midcentury design elements unusual for the period in Amityville: broad groupings of windows, an attached garage and breezeway, intact wide-plank interior paneling and original features from the architect’s office.
"It's very open space...very modern," Sabrina Lin said of the house’s interior layout and windows. Joseph Guidice said architect John H. Langlois worked locally on numerous projects, noting a list of houses and civic commissions from the 1940s and 1950s as evidence of his regional practice.
The Historic Preservation Commission nominated the property as a local landmark on the basis of its architecture and association with Langlois. Board members asked about distinctive features; presenters pointed to corner and triple-window groupings, original draft tables and an intact garage-breezeway configuration as contributing elements.
Chairperson Stephen Greenwald moved that the board recommend the nomination to the Board of Trustees; the motion was seconded by Member Mary D'Andrea and carried 5-0. Voting members recorded in the meeting minutes were Stephen Greenwald (Chairperson), Mary D'Andrea (Member), Laura Ellis (Member), Kelly Medwig (Member) and Justin Kennedy (Alternate Member), and the motion was listed as "carried: 5 ayes 0 nays." The recommendation will be forwarded to the Board of Trustees for their review.
The board did not impose additional conditions on the nomination. The Board of Trustees will receive the Planning Board’s recommendation and may schedule further review or public hearing per the village's procedures.
