Picayune council opens, closes nuisance hearings and sets cleanup hearing date for November

The Picayune City Council opened a public hearing on property-cleanup cases and moved to declare certain parcels public nuisances so the city can proceed with cleanup actions.
Code-enforcement staff described 307 Bay Street (corrected from a typographical 'Backstreet') as a long-vacant parcel in Council District 5 with no utilities since Sept. 26, 2022, and said it is "extremely overgrown" and recommended declaring it a public nuisance to allow the city to proceed with cleanup. No one appeared to represent the property. Council opened and later closed the hearing, then approved motions related to cleanup declarations.
Separately the council set a public hearing date of Nov. 18, 2025, for four additional properties by PIN/address (906 Central Ave; vacant lot at 6th & Beach St; 2311 Jackson Landing Road; 1116 Jackson Landing Road). Council moved and approved the date by voice vote.
Why it matters: Declaring a property a public nuisance authorizes administrative cleanup procedures that may result in city abatement and billing of the property owner; setting the Nov. 18 hearing formalizes the next step for additional properties.
