Council appoints Hashani Bolden to vacant Picayune school board seat

The Picayune City Council on Monday unanimously appointed Hashani Bolden to fill a school board seat that the mayor said had been vacant for “probably a year and 0.5.” The mayor invited Bolden to the dais and praised his community service and 20 years of leadership in health care and church ministry.
“I’m Hashani Bolden,” Bolden said after the council’s vote, thanking the mayor, council and city manager for the opportunity to serve. He said he does not “take it lightly,” described his family and community ties, and pledged to “do my utmost best to uphold the school board’s policies and procedures.”
Mayor (speaker) described Bolden as a lifelong Picayune resident and a proud graduate of Picayune Memorial High School, and said the council had already sworn Bolden in at a recent school board meeting. Members of the public and at least one former teacher offered support at the meeting, with a speaker noting Bolden’s work in local choirs and calling him “an asset to the school board with his young ideas.”
The council did not debate the appointment during the meeting beyond the outgoing remarks and public congratulations. The mayor said the vacancy had lasted about a year and that the council’s unanimous vote moved the district toward filling that seat.
The school board appointment was one of several routine items on the council’s agenda; the meeting continued into reports from the city manager and department heads.
