Recreation Director Cliff Ducey told the Garden City town hall on July 9 that the city's new recreation complex is nearing completion on the former Haines School property.
Ducey said the site is a 13‑acre property with 11 acres developed for the complex and a 32,000 square‑foot building that will include a double‑court basketball gym, a fitness center, administrative and rentable community rooms, and multipurpose spaces. "We've got 6 outdoor pickleball courts... It's a double court gym marked off with 6 more indoor pickleball courts," Ducey said, noting indoor space can be configured for volleyball as well.
The outdoor amenities include a synthetic turf field marked for football, lacrosse and soccer, a 20‑meter swimming pool with a splash pad and a zero‑entry section, and a 0.5‑mile walking trail with a marked red‑brick section for tracking laps. Ducey said furniture and signage are being installed and that staff hopes the facility will be ready for use in September.
Ducey encouraged residents to use the new facility once open and described it as a long‑term investment in community recreation.
Next steps: staff will continue final installations and notify the public when programming and scheduling are confirmed.
