Monthly parks report: pickleball court opens, new water tank and temporary trail closure after aggressive animal sighting

A parks staff member reported: “At the main park, our pickleball court is now open.” The staff speaker also said the tennis court should reopen by the end of the week and that picnic tables and additional grading work remain on the short-term to-do list.
Staff also said the town’s portable watering system has been upsized: “Instead of a 50 gallon tank, it's gonna be 100 gallons,” which staff said will reduce the number of refill trips required to water flower baskets and planters.
On public-safety concerns, committee members described an incident involving a distressed cow or elk that was charging vehicles and a runner. The committee reported coordinating with the police and state wildlife authorities (ODF and Oregon State Police) to close a trail while the situation was assessed. “We went ahead and did that,” a committee member said, and staff later planned to reopen the trail at the end of the day after confirming the calf could not be located.
Committee members also flagged summer staffing as a continuing issue; members expect the city to post for an additional parks position based on the approved budget in late June or July.
Next steps: staff will continue seasonal maintenance operations, follow up on staffing posts, and reopen the closed trail once police and wildlife guidance permit.
