Business Manager Eric Remington told the Board on July 13 that the district faces a possible major liability tied to the Hartford Open Choice program. According to Remington, Hartford is requesting payback based on a change in state statute affecting Open Choice special education reimbursement for the past four years. Suffield is resisting deducting the requested amount from the Fiscal Year 2026 bill and is exploring options for responding.
Remington also updated the board on operations: the district signed a five-year contract with M&J for bus transportation and is finalizing routes, all 18 HVAC units at Suffield High School have been installed with integration work ongoing, and bids for the high school roof replacement and a photovoltaic project are due July 28.
Board members discussed the Open Choice liability and asked follow-up questions about district transportation and route lengths. Remington said administration will develop a response strategy and provide updates to the board at a future meeting.
