Discover Mount Angel said it will bring the Christkindl Market back to downtown Mount Angel the weekend of Thanksgiving to support local businesses and attract visitors.
"The idea is to bring a true German style Christmas market right to downtown Mount Angel," said Scott, who presented the plan to the council and identified himself as representing Discover Mount Angel, a small-business subgroup of the chamber. He asked residents to follow Discover Mount Angel, the Mount Angel Chamber of Commerce or Mount Angel Christkindlmarket on social media for updates.
Scott outlined the proposed layout and features: market booths along the 100 block of North Garfield by the Glockenspiel north to College Street and along the 200 block of East Charles north of City Hall to the gazebo; a real Christmas tree lighting Friday at 6 p.m. on the north lawn of City Hall; Santa on Friday and on Saturday and Sunday at times to be posted; a beer garden behind the Sawfield House; and entertainment throughout the weekend. Event hours given were Friday (Nov. 25) 5–9 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.–9 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
Scott said the market aims to drive visitors into local retail businesses and highlighted a downtown lighting sponsorship: families may purchase a box of lights at Voxler's to help light downtown and be entered into a drawing for one child or family to help Santa light the tree.
He listed sponsors who were committed at the time of the presentation, including the Mount Angel Chamber of Commerce, Woodburn Nursery and Azaleas, 4 B Farms, Cheekscape and Angel Mountain Christmas, with in-kind support from the City of Mount Angel and others. He said organizers will promote the event via local print advertising and social media.
