Staff told the council the study would take about six to eight weeks and that, if authorized, the manager could sign the contract immediately. "I can sign it first thing tomorrow morning," staff said, urging swift authorization so the consultant can begin work.
Councilors said the intersection spans multiple jurisdictions and noted the study's value in documenting options and costs. One councilor said an engineer's report would give the city "much better ammunition" when asking the county to join improvements, listing solutions ranging from enhanced signage to a rapid-flashing beacon.
Councilor Zorba moved to authorize the contract; the motion was seconded and carried after unanimous "Aye" responses from councilors present. Staff said the study will identify options from least to most expensive, and any recommended construction or changes affecting county right-of-way would require county approval.
The city identified DKS Traffic Engineering as the consultant in the motion; no construction contract was awarded at the meeting. The study is expected to return to the council with recommendations and cost estimates once complete.
