Silver Creek board approves two chipseal add-ons; staff warned Intercity Silver Creek has highest overage risk

The Silver Creek Township Board of Supervisors approved two additional chipseal projects tied to Allied’s existing contract at its June 26 special meeting, despite maintenance staff warning that the Intercity Silver Creek add-on carried the highest risk of cost overruns.

Maintenance reported Allied holds the bid for a four-mile loop and the township has the option to add 20% to that contract to include work on 156th Street by Elder north of the freeway; the add-on was estimated at about $14,693. Allied’s work was scheduled to begin Monday, June 29, the minutes say. Maintenance told the board contracts are written so the township pays for materials actually used; as a result, final costs can differ from engineer estimates.

The minutes record that adding Intercity Silver Creek would raise the total road projects to about $605,349. Water for 150th and the Intercity work was estimated at about $3,000. Maintenance estimated maximum overages for both additional projects at roughly $35,000, plus water — “so about $40,000,” the minutes state — and recommended against doing Intercity Silver Creek because it was the highest risk for overages.

Vice Chairman Geyen moved to approve both additional projects; Supervisor Nelson seconded. The motion carried 5-0. The minutes note the township’s prior decision, made about four years earlier, to have maintenance monitor projects rather than hire an external engineer.

The motion approved the add-ons at the prices and risk profile discussed; the minutes do not record any conditions or an amended funding source. The board adjourned at 9:29 a.m.
