Hinsdale board hears first reads for two historic-preservation grants

At the July 21 meeting the Hinsdale Board of Trustees held first readings on two historic-preservation incentive applications.
Planner staff described a matching grant request at 232 South Clay to replace eight enclosed-porch windows that will replicate the home's historic appearance. Staff listed the project cost at roughly $17,968 and calculated a 50% grant of about $8,968. The Historic Preservation Commission reviewed the project and recommended the board approve a building-permit fee waiver, expedited processing and the matching grant. The homeowner, who said the enclosed porch windows "do not operate at all," told trustees replacing them will restore the porch's appearance and usability.
The board also considered a first read for 633 South Washington, where owners propose a one-story, roughly 460-square-foot rear addition to provide a first-floor bedroom, new laundry and powder room and a reconfigured kitchen to enable aging in place. Staff estimated the total project cost at approximately $140,000, making the homeowner eligible for the village's $10,000 grant and property-tax relief that would apply to the village portion of real estate taxes over five years (estimated at about $5,900). The Historic Preservation Commission voted unanimously to recommend fee waivers, expedited review and the grant to the board. Both items will return for a second reading in August.
What happens next: staff will place the preservation incentive items on the August consent agenda for final consideration; grants are paid only after work is completed and permit compliance is verified.
