Warren County panel approves workforce and basketball funding, tables park grant amendment

Warren County’s occupancy-tax committee on July 21 approved two funding moves and deferred another after debate over budget sources and timing.

A resolution to provide up to $5,000 toward a county workforce recognition event advanced after staff said local businesses provide most support; one supervisor voted against the measure. Committee members discussed whether the business community should contribute more and whether the county’s participation should be limited.

The committee also approved a $100,000 commitment to help bring the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys basketball championship back to the Glens Falls area. Heather, the county tourism staff member presenting the request, told supervisors the bid is competitive and that local municipalities have been or will be asked to contribute as well. Supervisors asked for a budget breakdown and more information about which local partners would share costs before the full board presentation.

On a separate action, staff introduced a resolution to match a New York State development grant with a $50,000 local share to fund a strategic plan for Charles R. Wood Park. Supervisor Wilde suggested allocating $25,000 from the Park O&M budget as part of the match; staff and the county’s procedural advisor said the committee had a motion on the floor to approve $50,000 and that an amendment would be required to change the figure. Given timing concerns and budget questions, Supervisor Weil moved to table the request; the committee voted to table and referred the item for further consideration.

The committee took no vote on the proposed air-race host agreement during the meeting and asked staff to return with a negotiated host agreement and full budget for that item.
