Several Tega Cay residents urged the city on May 18 to help keep the 82X Rock Hill Express commuter route running after staff reported Rock Hill is withdrawing its local contribution.
Resident Michael Plumley told council he has ridden the line for nearly 20 years and asked the city to pursue talks with Rock Hill, Fort Mill and York County to find a funding solution. "I've been riding it for close to 20 years," Plumley said. "We don't want to give up on Rock Hill." He asked council to collect ridership data specific to Tega Cay residents to aid any cost‑benefit analysis.
Laura Kadlik, another rider, said the bus is essential for many workers who do not have other transportation and for young residents seeking employment. "For many of my fellow riders, it is their only option," Kadlik said.
City Manager Charlie told council the situation is preliminary but serious: "It's my understanding that's gonna stop July 1," he said, describing Rock Hill’s withdrawal of a roughly $10,000 monthly contribution and noting ridership has declined from pre‑pandemic levels. Staff discussed possible county or municipal cost‑sharing but emphasized no commitments have been made.
What happens next: Council members asked staff to gather more detailed ridership numbers, solicit input from impacted residents and explore possible regional cost‑sharing options before any decision is made.
