Parks board chair proposes walking path and commemorative program at Malabar Community Park

Hans Kemmler, chair of Malabar’s Parks and Recreation Board, told the Town Council on May 4 that the board is recommending a program to offer low‑maintenance commemorative benches, plaques and trees in town parks and wants to pursue a paved walking path at Malabar Community Park.
Kemmler said the initial path would run from the playground parking lot past the soccer field to the bathroom and back to the baseball field, and estimated the full loop at just over half a mile. He recommended a width "between 6‑12 feet" and suggested using the A.I. Tuttle Trail as a template. The board also identified a potential Kubota grant to help fund park projects.
Council members expressed support for the ideas and asked staff to prepare options. Vice‑Chair Marisa Acquaviva said a walking path inside the park could provide a safer place to walk where the town lacks sidewalks, and Council Member Wayne Abare cited high use at similar trails. Mayor Steve Rivet said he had no objections and requested a more detailed presentation.
Town Manager Lisa Morrell said staff will evaluate paving and lower‑cost alternatives, such as stabilizer surfacing, and return with cost estimates and design options at a future meeting. No formal action was taken; the Parks and Recreation Board will develop a plan for the playground parking lot and the proposed trail.
