Arborist recommends removing six trees and pruning 24 after village inventory update

Arborist Richard Jones presented an updated inventory showing 309 Village trees valued at $2.6 million, an increase from previous counts because of recent plantings and more precise measurements. He rated 72% of trees in good condition, 22% fair and 6% poor or declining. Jones recommended removing six trees and performing maintenance pruning on 24 trees, prioritizing those that pose hazards near roadways and sidewalks. He also reported nine invasive trees—identified as white mulberries and Amur honeysuckle—mostly along Montrose Driveway between Kensington Parkway and Connecticut Avenue, and cited a large sassafras tree leaning over Montrose that had previously trapped a truck.
Jones said he would meet with Pepco to discuss utility-related tree work and will provide cost estimates for invasive-species removal and the recommended tasks. The Village Manager will circulate task orders to the three contracted tree service providers so the council can select the most cost-efficient option.
