Planning board hears Keshe's Auto Recycling site plan; applicant says parking variance and compliance steps needed

At an informational hearing the Town of Babylon Planning Board reviewed a site plan submittal for Keshe's Auto Recycling Inc. The applicant's representative said the business has operated for about 35 years, experienced two fires in 2017 that led to a court settlement in 2018, and has worked to comply with town and county requirements since that settlement.

John Bop, speaking for the applicant, said the proposed work is an approximately 20 by 60 foot side addition to an existing building used for auto recycling and salvage. He told the board he expects to need a variance for parking because relatively few employees work on site (he estimated three employees) and the business mostly receives and moves materials by truck; he proposed reducing required parking down to nine spaces.

Bop said paperwork related to a 10‑foot sidewalk dedication had been delivered to the town attorney's office on 08/07/2025 and that town staff has since located those documents. He said the business believes it has addressed most items from the earlier settlement and will comply with outstanding requests; he asked the board to consider the parking variance in light of the site's operational needs.

The board heard no public comment on the item, moved to close the hearing and reserved decision, and the chair read that the record will stay open for written comment and described how interested parties may inspect application documents at the planning office or submit written comments to planningcomments@townofBabylonny.gov.

Next steps: Planning staff will verify the sidewalk dedication paperwork and evaluate the requested parking variance before the board issues a decision.
