Board orders demolition of fire-damaged house at 1447 Aransas Ave.

The San Antonio Building Standards Board voted May 7 to order demolition of the heavily fire-damaged house at 1447 (aka 1449) Aransas Avenue, finding the structure a public nuisance and a hazard to life, health and safety.
Dangerous premises officer Ryan Garza told the board the single-story residence shows extensive fire, smoke and water damage, sagging roof decking, detached exterior walls and a sunken foundation. "The structure is unfit for human occupancy," Garza said, and staff recommended demolition under City Code Article 8, Chapter 6.
Officer Robert Dupey of the San Antonio Police Department's East Safe Unit described repeated police responses to the address over the past year for assaults, narcotics and other calls for service and called the building an open, abandoned location that endangers officers and the public. "It's an abandoned building, nobody's answering, the door's open," Dupey said, noting multiple entries by officers because of public-safety concerns.
Board member Fred Andes moved to declare the property a public nuisance and order vacating, securing and demolition within 30 days; Robert Behnke seconded. A roll call produced four ayes and one abstention (Dr. Fazal Hussain), and the motion carried.
The board's order requires the property be secured and demolished within the board's timeline; the chair noted owners and lienholders may appeal the order in civil district court within 30 days of mailing.
