Board removes sentence encouraging generative AI use from technology policy

District staff told the board the sentence came from model language recommended by the North Carolina School Boards Association and that the suggested deletion was not a substantive change to the policy’s core provisions. A staff presenter said the amendment could be accomplished during second read without sending the whole policy back to the policy committee.
Board members debated whether the language sent the right signal for classroom practice and the district’s digital learning plan before adopting the amendment.
The decision removes the explicit encouragement but retains the remainder of the technology policy. The board did not direct additional immediate policy changes; staff said they would implement the amended text and continue work on the district’s digital learning plan.
