Resident urges council to keep Vermont Fitness pool open, citing seniors and families forced to travel

Emma Lawson of 308 Guffey Street addressed the council during citizens' petitions to urge the city to consider keeping the pool at Vermont Fitness (above Pizza Hut) open.
Lawson said seniors and families now travel to Bridgeport — roughly 18 miles — to access pool facilities and described the distance and traffic as a hardship for older residents. She cited the city’s past role in taking over a Y facility in Clarksburg and reopening it as a local precedent to consider.
"Our seniors and our youth and family are traveling to Bridgeport. We really would love to keep people here in this city," Lawson said, urging the council to explore options to retain local recreational services.
The council received the petition during the public comment period; no motion or formal action on the pool was taken at the meeting.
