Historic-design board approves illuminated LED signs for Baked And Brew at 958 Lincoln Way

The Historic Design Review Commission voted unanimously to approve HDRC Resolution 2607, allowing two illuminated LED wall signs for the Baked And Brew cafe at 958 Lincoln Way.
Planning Director Tia Klomp told commissioners the applicant proposes two LED wall signs on a tenant frontage that spans about 41 feet; the sign area would be roughly 24 square feet, within the ordinance allowance. She described the signs as 14-inch channel letters mounted on high-density urethane panels with warm, indirect halo illumination and said staff recommends approval subject to the conditions in Exhibit A and the sign layout in Exhibit B.
“The channel letters will be backlit with warm indirect halo illumination visible at night,” Klomp said, and noted a building permit will be required to confirm compliance with lighting controls and the city’s energy-efficiency standards.
Applicant Mujahid Yaman, who said his cafe expects to open July 30, told the commission he plans to operate evening service from about 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., has applied for a beer-and-wine license and has hired 10 staff. “We will comply with historic Auburn mission and also requirements,” Yaman said.
Commissioners asked whether the proposal included painting the wall behind the sign; staff said no color changes are proposed and that the design uses a sepia/wood-like appearance to avoid a plastic look. Commissioners also discussed operating hours and energy controls; Klomp said most signs are turned off after business hours and recent standards require a photocell so signs dim to halo illumination.
Commissioner Grama moved to adopt the resolution approving the new signs. The commission recorded an aye vote from Chair Hyatt, Vice Chair Kramer, Commissioner Johnson, Commissioner Hobbs, Commissioner Kosinski, Commissioner Costa and Commissioner Friesen; the measure passed unanimously.
The approval allows the applicant to proceed to the building-permit stage, where staff will verify sign lighting controls and other permit conditions. With the HDRC action complete, the applicant may proceed with permit applications required for installation.
