Fairway, Kan. — At the Dec. 9 Fairway City Council meeting, the police chief reported progress on staffing and recent investigations, saying the department has hired a new officer and forwarded suspect information to the county.
The chief announced the new hire: "His name is Michael Bliss. He started December 1. He's actually out right now on our FTO program," the chief said, referring to field training. The chief said Bliss is a tenured sergeant from Paola who joined Fairway’s department on Dec. 1.
The chief also said the department has identified people involved in several pursuits and has sent charges to the county for prosecution. "We put that in the county's hands at this point," the chief said. He added that investigators expect more developments before Christmas.
On recruitment, the chief said Fairway has interviewed and is interviewing four additional candidates to fill the remaining vacancy and praised Lieutenant Bayless for his role in the hiring process. Council members expressed appreciation and asked follow-up questions about car burglaries and vacation-check procedures; the chief confirmed officers receive vacation-check requests daily and that the department logs those entries.
The police report was received with no formal action; council moved on to other routine agenda items.
