"I say it all the time as a crime of opportunity. Leave your car doors locked. Do not leave anything valuable inside of them," Sergeant Strong told council members when asked for prevention tips after describing a series of incidents that occurred between about 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. He noted deputies recovered at least one stolen vehicle that did not stop for officers and that deputies made multiple early‑morning contacts that deterred further break‑ins.
Sergeant Strong said the sheriff’s office met with City of Columbus officials and will continue coordination to ensure mutual aid and event planning are in place for the festival weekend. He also urged residents to secure vehicles and remove valuables.
