Fairway chief reports recent pursuits and a new sergeant starting Dec. 1

The Fairway police chief reported an uptick in vehicle pursuits over the past month and said officers identified and took several people into custody; one individual resisted and was found to be under the influence of heroin or fentanyl, the chief said.
The chief announced he extended an offer to a tenured sergeant from outside the metro who accepted and whose first day will be Dec. 1. He said he has another offer pending for an officer currently deployed overseas who is expected back in April, and that additional outside applicants have applied following the sergeant hire. "I'm hoping that within the next month or two we will essentially be fully staffed," the chief said.
The chief said the department had some accidents during the month but added that recruitment activity and the recent hire are encouraging developments for staffing and operations. He invited questions but asked that council members note staffing remains a work in progress.
