The Fairway City Council on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution acknowledging past discriminatory restrictive covenants in property documents and directing steps to remove such language.
Nathan, reporting for the administration and finance committee, said the council added "religions" to the first whereas clause earlier in the day and that the resolution follows previous local steps and a recent homeowners‑association amendment. "We did add to the 1st whereas we added religions to the list…so that that is in the final signed copy that the mayor will execute later this evening," Nathan said.
Councilor Jerry Williams described reading archival documents and said the language made a strong impression. "When I read the documents from my closing where it said no Negroes allowed," Jerry said, recounting the emotional impact. Other council members thanked staff and praised the resolution as an acknowledgment of past wrongs rather than an exercise in finger‑pointing.
The council moved and approved the resolution with the addition of religion among listed protected categories. The vote was unanimous.
