Fairway council authorizes mayor to sign consolidated Shawnee Indian Mission agreement

The Fairway City Council on Monday authorized the mayor to execute a consolidated agreement governing operations and stakeholder engagement at the Shawnee Indian Mission, combining separate past agreements into a single document.
"This document combines all 3 parties into 1 agreement and then it does lay out, some of the work that we've already done in terms of engagement and vision for the site which wasn't necessarily included in the 2016…agreement," Nathan told the council. He said the consolidated agreement largely restates commitments the city has followed since 2016 and does not commit the city to additional obligations beyond current practice.
Nathan said the administration had sought legal review from the historical society and expected any comments back early in the week; the requested motion authorized the mayor to execute the agreement after final review by the city’s legal staff. Councilor (speaker 6) moved the authorization; the motion was seconded, and the council approved it unanimously.
Council members praised the stakeholder engagement language in the draft agreement. One councilor said the document’s "vision and stakeholder engagement" section appeared to be meaningfully crafted and hoped it remained in the final version.
What’s next: The mayor will sign the agreement following final legal review by the Kansas State Historical Society and the city’s legal team.
