The Elmhurst City Council used the July 20 meeting to honor outgoing City Manager Jim Grabowski and to approve a special selection process for his successor.
Mayor Scott M Levin announced the city had engaged a private search firm that supplied a recommended top‑20 pool. He proposed a special committee — the mayor plus the four committee chairs — to interview the top 20, narrow to eight candidates on July 27 and ultimately trim to four finalists for full‑council interviews. After debate about whether the entire council should participate earlier in vetting, the motion to form the special committee passed 11 ayes, 2 nays and 1 absent.
Council members paid tribute to Grabowski’s tenure and accomplishments, citing his leadership on flood control, downtown development and team building. Grabowski, speaking briefly, thanked staff and the community and said municipal service had been a privilege.
What's next: The special committee will review the consultant’s candidate materials beginning July 27 and work toward interviews and finalist selection; final interviews will be scheduled and executive‑session deliberations will occur per the mayor’s outlined timetable.
