Committee shifts to library-led sustainability week, advances climate-action timelines

Staff reported limited vendor interest for a big event and suggested promoting the library’s week of talks and the successful "junk-in-the-trunk" swap as ways to maintain engagement. Andersen Windows expressed interest in participating, and library staff plan a range of smaller activities — repair cafes, clothing swaps and a children’s clothing exchange timed for back-to-school.
Why it matters: committee members said smaller, focused events can sustain outreach with fewer staff resources, avoid a costly one-time festival and tap existing community momentum. Staff said partnering with the library and local organizations will help the climate action plan outreach and keep people engaged while staff focus on ordinance work.
The committee also reviewed town- and commission-level progress on the climate action plan. Staff said the draft will be presented at a Town Council workshop on Sept. 16 (aligned with the data center conversation), followed by a public comment window and anticipated finalization in mid-October. Five initial implementation blueprints were described: increasing curbside waste participation, developing a zero-emission vehicle policy for municipal fleets, establishing an energy coach service for residents, prioritizing municipal infrastructure at flood risk, and assessing long-term system costs for municipal upgrades.
Members confirmed a recommendation that staff coordinate outreach around planned library events, support repair-cafe volunteers and postpone a larger festival until next year if interest remains limited. The committee set its next meeting for Aug. 26 and asked staff to circulate event dates and volunteer opportunities.
Closing note: staff will provide specific dates and a memo summarizing recommended event support and the Sept. 16 workshop materials to committee members.
