At its June 9 meeting, the Woodbury Select Board heard an extended road report covering multiple operational items: staff said they have not yet reached David Barber to discuss his bridge repair request and will try to obtain contact information through the town library.
Road staff described recent ditching on Wheeler Hill, addition of a culvert to improve drainage, planned grading work, and grading/loader operations. Staff said they will meet with a property owner about a curb-cut and controlled utility boring under Cabot Road and noted the crews plan to coordinate with permit requirements for work in the town right-of-way.
On equipment, staff reported outreach to dealers for trade-in estimates on the 5.5-ton truck and discussed whether a smaller 0.75-ton pickup could meet needs while saving thousands of dollars. The board debated cost differences (a large truck price previously cited around $130k vs. an estimated $70k–$75k for a smaller vehicle) and the potential operational tradeoffs.
Staff also told the board a contractor (Bass) requested temporary road closures to complete work; staff proposed placing concrete barriers at the work site while allowing resident access to houses beyond the closed section.
The board accepted VTrans engineering grant awards for two projects: design funding of $5,400 for Church Street with a $600 town match, and $7,200 for Bailey Bridge Road with an approximately $800 match. Staff said they will sign and return the grant documents to initiate design work. The Bailey Bridge project may require a temporary bridge or alternate access during construction because of limited local access, and staff noted that temporary bridge costs should be considered in project planning.
On town facilities, the Chair reported meeting with a contractor to inspect the town garage roof. The contractor found no catastrophic failure of the metal roof but observed rot in some sheathing and possible leaks around the chimney. Board members agreed to get a follow-up estimate for repairs and to consider short-term fixes while developing a longer-term plan for the garage footprint and possible alternatives—such as relocating gravel piles or buying adjacent land to expand storage and operations.
No formal votes were taken on capital purchases or garage actions at the meeting; staff will return with estimates and recommendations for board authorization.
