Sunoco price-sign proposal at 858 South Central Avenue draws ZBA questions over large variance

Karen Greenlee of Prosigns, representing Sunoco, presented an application for an area variance to add a price cabinet to the existing Sunoco pole at 858 South Central Avenue. Greenlee said the canopy sign permit was issued separately and that the price cabinet requested is a 19-square-foot addition intended to display current pump prices.
Board members probed alternatives that would reduce the requested variance: moving pricing under a canopy logo, removing or replacing the existing large Sunoco logo, or designing a smaller price cabinet so the request would not be as large. Staff noted that adding weight to the single existing pole would likely require engineering and footing certification and that replacing the pole could be costly on the small site.
Members cautioned about setting a precedent for very large sign variances and suggested the applicant consult the corporate brand team and return with alternatives or a representative who can authorize design changes. Greenlee said she would take the board’s suggestions back to the project manager and the brand team; the board did not vote on the application at this meeting.
The ZBA asked staff to prepare a list of follow-up questions and suggested the applicant return to a future meeting with either a revised design or a corporate representative able to respond to engineering or brand constraints.
