At the April 20 meeting, Art Barbuto representing Community Crossroads proposed installing communication boards at the Depot Road playground to help children with disabilities communicate. Barbuto said Community Crossroads would cover the cost of boards across 11 towns the group serves and is seeking partnership from local Recreation departments for installation.
Commission members discussed two mounting options — standalone boards or attaching them to existing fences — and raised concerns about installation costs and placement logistics. The commission approved the concept in principle but deferred deciding on the specific installation method until staff can confirm budget, installation quotes and mounting specifications.
Angie Ingraham and other members said they appreciated the offer and that the partnership would expand accessibility at town playgrounds, but stressed the need to finalize where and how boards would be mounted to ensure safety and longevity.
Next steps include Recreation staff coordinating with Community Crossroads on mounting specifications and possible installation schedules.
