Mesilla commission backs Las Cruces Public Schools’ CTE building recommendation to trustees

The Mesilla Planning, Zoning and Historical Commission voted to recommend approval of a proposed career-and-technical education (CTE) building submitted by Las Cruces Public Schools for the Rio Grande Prep Institute campus in Mesilla.
Staff presented PNCH case 0621272355 and described a new building of about 4,000–4,295 gross square feet that would include a CTE shop for construction trades, classrooms, restrooms, storage and support spaces. The project scope includes earthworks, a new exterior concrete pad, a canopy for outdoor work, a fenced yard with a sliding gate, drainage improvements and utility extensions. The structure will use concrete masonry units and structural steel with a stucco finish and TPO roofing, staff said.
"I recommend approval," staff said during the presentation. Robert Williams, who identified himself as a construction project manager for Las Cruces Public Schools, told the commission the new CTE building will be standalone and will not alter the existing school building.
Commissioners asked technical questions about acronyms and details in the plans — including gross square footage, ventilation placement and parking — and staff said venting will be located on the roof behind parapets and that parking was calculated to accommodate the new facility and anticipated future projects at the front of the school. Commissioners also discussed exterior materials and color coordination; the applicant’s team said the exterior will be light stucco with red clay tile accents at the main entry to complement the existing school.
After discussion, commissioners voted to approve the application as presented. The chair and staff clarified that the commission’s action is a recommendation to the board of trustees; the board will consider final approval next month.
Next steps: the commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to the board of trustees for final action, and staff indicated the full building plans and the applicant’s letter of intent are available in the project packet.
