Board approves $4,218 change order to abate asbestos at sewer operations facility

The Lower Paxton Township Board of Supervisors approved a $4,218 change order July 21 to abate asbestos discovered in the adhesive beneath floor tiles at the township’s sewer operations facility.
Planning and operations staff told the board that tests showed the floor tiles themselves did not contain asbestos but that the original adhesive did. The contractor submitted Change Order No. 1 for $4,218 to remove and properly dispose of the asbestos-containing adhesive. Staff recommended removing the existing flooring and abating the adhesive rather than installing new flooring over the old surface because installing over the existing materials would void warranties and could transfer slab movement to the new flooring, producing visible movement in three to five years.
The original contract amount for the floor replacement was $60,752; approval of the change order increased the contract to $64,970. The board moved, seconded and approved the change order by voice vote.
The board also confirmed the replacement surface will be vinyl. The work will proceed under the existing contract with the contractor instructed to follow asbestos abatement and disposal procedures.
