The Town of Chesterfield Planning Board voted July 6 to hold a public hearing on proposed zoning changes that would add a definition for "Camping Units" and remove Zoning Ordinance 408.
At the meeting, Secretary Beverly Bernard said most other towns do not allow a camper to be stored on a vacant lot, raising a common regulatory concern the proposed language is intended to address. James Hancock moved to accept the proposed edits to Zoning Ordinance 207.7, to remove Ordinance 408, to adopt a formal definition for "Camping Units," and to set a public hearing on those changes for July 20, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Offices; Beverly Bernard seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Selectman Representative Fran Shippee urged the board to seek the Town attorney's review of the proposed changes before the hearing to resolve legal questions and ensure enforceability.
The board provided no additional amendment when it approved the hearing date and directed staff to notice the item. The public hearing will give residents an opportunity to comment before the board takes any final action. The board's next meeting was scheduled for July 20, 2026.
