The Coquille SD 8 board voted to direct the superintendent to make a $1,800,000 reduction in next year's budget after returning from executive session Tuesday.
Board member Heather moved the directive and Sharon seconded; the board approved the motion by voice vote. The action follows a superintendent report showing declining enrollment and warning of budgetary impact.
The superintendent presented the district's latest population report, citing a current enrollment figure of about 1,181 students and noting the district is averaging roughly 11.86 in average daily membership. He said the district projects being down about 145 students over a three‑year window and that level of decline cannot be sustained at current staffing levels.
Earlier in the meeting the board tabled a separate motion to have the director make an $1,800,000 reduction pending more information; that tabling motion (moved by Steve and seconded by Marcia) passed by voice vote. After executive session, the board returned and approved the directive to the superintendent.
The fiscal director also presented corrected financial statements and a projected year-end balance of $1,031,003. Board members questioned whether there had been correspondence about changed bus times affecting students' ability to access breakfast; staff confirmed students were able to get breakfast when needed.
The board adjourned after recording the directive.
