The Coquille SD 8 superintendent told the board that the district has mobilized staff across six committees to prepare for implementation of Senate Bill 141, the state education accountability act.
"Each one of the committees met at least three times. They looked at longitudinal data, current practices, regional trends, and they made recommendations for the future," the superintendent said, describing participation by more than 60 staff including administrators, teachers and classified employees.
Committee topics include K–2 attendance and attraction strategies, 3rd- and 8th-grade proficiency alignment, 9th-grade on-track systems, four-year graduation supports, five‑year completer pathways (including GED and testing access), and mental‑health and reengagement staffing. The superintendent said the district has been using grant dollars to support testing and is pursuing sustainable funding for on-site testing as a Pearson testing center at Winter Lakes High School.
The district has invested in the IXL digital program under a five-year agreement and awaits the state board's decision about interim assessments; the superintendent said staff will align assessments before the May budget process. Committees will present detailed SB 141 plans to the board in the coming months, and the board will consider incorporating those plans into the June budget approval.
Board members asked clarifying questions about assessment choices, staffing implications and next steps. The superintendent said the administrative team will continue refining budget proposals and assessment selections over the next two months and will present committee recommendations to the board.
