National Weather Service names New Port Richey 'StormReady'

Jennifer Hubbard, a warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin, presented New Port Richey with the StormReady designation on Feb. 4, noting the city completed required elements including a 24-hour warning point, emergency operations planning, multiple methods to receive and alert the public, spotter training and community preparedness activities. "To be recognized as storm ready, a community must establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operation center ..." Hubbard said.
Staff said the designation was achieved in October of the previous year and is the first municipality in the county to become StormReady. The recognition is valid for four years and expires on Oct. 24, 2028. Council members thanked staff and the National Weather Service and invited photo opportunities to mark the recognition.
