Rock County commissioners approve road hire, liquor license and insurance rate; claims audited

The Rock County Board of Commissioners at its May 19 meeting in Bassett approved a slate of routine county actions including a road crew hire, a special-event liquor license and a county insurance premium for the 2026–27 budget year.
The board unanimously approved hiring Jacob Walton for the advertised road position at $20.00 per hour, increasing to $21.75 after a six-month probationary period; the motion was made by Chairman Wade Hollenbeck and seconded by Commissioner Colby Sybrant. Commissioners also approved a Special Designated Liquor License for the Bassett Country Club to cover the June Expo scheduled for June 16–18, 2026 after a request from Casey Foster; the motion was made by Commissioner Faye Smith and seconded by Sybrant.
On budget items, the board accepted NACO’s Blue Cross Blue Shield single premium rate of $1,434.62 for the 2026–27 fiscal year, either to adopt the rate or provide reimbursement for a single policy (motion by Faye Smith, second by Wade Hollenbeck). The library director, Macey Lackaff, presented the library’s 2026–27 budget but the commissioners tabled that matter until the Budget meeting. The minutes also record that county payroll processing for an employee (Joe Contreres) will be reviewed by the clerk after he noted he currently receives three separate checks for different jobs.
Financial oversight: The board audited a detailed list of claims covering general government, road, library and E911 accounts, including payroll, benefits, fuel, parts and vendor payments. On a motion by Chairman Hollenbeck and second by Commissioner Sybrant, the board approved the May 19 claims by unanimous roll-call vote.
Meeting close: The board adjourned at 3:04 p.m.; commissioners set the next regular meeting for Monday, June 1, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. in the commissioners' room of the Rock County Courthouse.
