Mountain Transit reports sharp ridership growth; commission approves $12,000 support

Mountain Transit Authority (MTA) told the Greenbrier County Commission that local ridership has grown sharply and requested $12,000 in county support for fiscal year 2026–27.
“Last year in Greenbrier County we transported 45,020 passenger trips. This year through March 2026 we are at 54,002,” Timothy Thomas of Mountain Transit said during an April 21 presentation. MTA projected 72,394 trips for the full fiscal year 2026 and said expanding routes and driver capacity are priorities.
Thomas outlined current routes (two in White Sulphur, a Lewisburg route via Walmart, a western route through Rainelle and Rupert to Alderson, and a Monroe County link running several days a week) and noted the agency is adding weekday service to some routes in FY2027. He also said nonemergency medical transportation and trips to work are major uses of service. “For every dollar that goes into public transit, $5 comes back into the local community,” Thomas said, quoting the organization’s economic evaluation.
Commissioners voiced support and approved a $12,000 letter-of-request for Mountain Transit by voice vote to help the authority meet match obligations on federal and state grants.
