Commission proclaims April Child Abuse Prevention Month and recognizes telecommunicators week

At its April 7 meeting the Greenbrier County Commission approved a proclamation designating April 2026 as Child Abuse Prevention Month and agreed to provide courthouse space for a Children's Memorial Flag Day event set for April 24, 2026.
Mary Karna of Children's Home Society, speaking for the Children's Memorial Flag Day committee, read sections of the proclamation and requested permission to use the courthouse flagpole area for a noon ceremony on April 24; the commission approved the request and noted a courtroom may be used as a weather backup. "Whereas children are key to the state's future success... we must come together as partners so that the voices of our children are heard," Karna read from the proclamation. Commissioners thanked the committee and posed brief logistical questions about signatures and photos.
The commission also adopted a proclamation recognizing National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. A representative from the county's communications/911 center described recognition plans, including decorations and meals for dispatch staff during the week and opportunities for commissioners to visit. Commissioners moved and approved the proclamation and invited dispatch staff to pose for photos with the signed proclamation.
The proclamations were approved by voice votes during the meeting; no binding policy or funding decisions were associated with either proclamation.
